The Cherry Tree

Earlier this year, I decided that I wanted to encourage more birds to the garden. Unfortunately, we do have a very large cat population so I did have to address this a little. I bought a sonic sound thing off ebay which together with some anti cat smelly stuff reduced the number of visitors. Don't get me wrong, I love all animals but we had so many, I couldn't attract any birds at all.
Afterwards we put up several feeding stations and bit by bit we are attracting some feathered visitors.
To make life easier for them, I wanted to add some larger bushes and a tree to provide a little added safety for when the cats do come stalking. I decided to plant a fruit tree. Twofold, it is nice to plant a tree and it gives some perch areas. I didn't want to get an apple tree becuase I always have planted apple trees in the past ...and every time I do, I seem to end up moving. So, I have a small paranoia about planting apples. We took a trip to the garden centre and I said I would simply choose the nicest, sturdiest looking fruit tree whatever the fruit.
And so we ended up with a Cherry tree :D
It was lovely to see the blossom just a few weeks after planting it. I didn't expect it to bear any fruit in the first year, it is still getting established. However, just over a week ago, I did manage to pick a handful of cherries.

I used my new Derwent Coloursofts on Stonehenge paper and really liked the combination. Have a good weekend.

wonderful cherries! I have stonehenge, but haven't gotten around to using it yet.
As for the cats, if you still have trouble, there are motion detectors that attach to a hose, and squirt water at anything that moves (including you if you forget it's there). They work, though I suspect expensive. My birds just have to to watch out, and I put prickly things (like rosebush cuttings) down where cats like to sit.

the cherries look great :D nice deep red and lovely shine to them

the other day we had the kitchen window open only about 3 inches but somehow a cat got in and was sitting on the windowsill with no care in the world :/ if I wasn't so startled he would have gotten a book in the face. I like cats I do, and I would never want them hurt but I am getting sick of them making a mess in the yard, killing the birds and then not eating them :/ not that eating them would make me feel better, and I hate that we can not leave the windows open without the risk of a cat getting in. I wish people would realize that their cat is actually worse off outside and if they want to let it out build a cat run or put a harness on it. Half of the problems would be solved if people would fix their cats, no reason to breed your pet when the shelters are bursting with cats.

sorry bit of a sour topic with me. I have gotten into arguments with people when they say that their cat never leaves their yard, so really the cat that just tried to get into our flat isn't yours then? shuts people up :p

i wish we could find and afford the device that ingrid was talking about. would be perfect for keeping away the cats and the kids :D

Thanks Ingrid, I am getting to like Stonehenge for some things.
I also use sharp sticks and things in some areas of the garden.

Hi Jen, Thanks for your comments.

I really do understand your cat thing. I love cats and next doors regularly pays us a visit. But, I do hate it when lots of them use my garden as their loo and the day one leapt out and snatched a baby bird, I was nearly crying. I do wish people would at least put bells around their necks.
The sonic sounder was off ebay and was not too expensive, it does work in a limited way in that it has reduced the number we get. The batteries need changing quite regularly though.
The one Ingrid is talking about costs about £45 from a garden centre...but it must be permanenetly hooked to a hose. For us this would mean we would have to have an outside tap fitted and thats where it would get really expensive.
It is sad that you can't enjoy the birds in your garden because of other people pets. Incidentally, in NZ owners are required to keep cats under control the same as dogs!
All you can really do is site everything so that the birds get plenty warning and get yourself a super soaker ;)

the problem with the bells is that a lot of cats learn to stalk so that the bells don't make any sound :/

hmm might have to look into getting one of those devices. We just put an outside tap in so thats one thing done :) (which isn't expensive if you do it yourself and wasn't that hard. i think the hardest part was drilling threw the wall)

Your depiction of the cherries is fantastic! Well done!
Cherry trees are so lovely. We had one where I grew up & when it bloomed I'd make leis from the flowers to give to my mom.

These look so mouthwatering - it's a really lovely drawing Chrissy, makes me feel greedy! So those cat frightener things work do they? I've often wondered. There is almost one cat per house where I live and our neighbour feeds them all in his garden, so we have cats in our garden too, constantly. And I love cats, but the birds don't get to forage at all and I've always been too scared to feed them because of the cat danger. Sigh.

Even if it was a random choice I think cherry trees are one of the most beautiful, and I am envious of those shiny fruit! If you ever think about getting another fruit tree I'd recommend a pear tree. They have blossom in spring, and in autumn as well as fruit they have the most gorgeous leaf colours, I'm surprised they are not more famous for it.

Hi Nessy, I do think it is almost sad that we try not to encourage the birds because of the number of cats. The posts on here do indicate some very irresponsible cat owners :( I do the bees and butterflies too...Thanks for your lovely comment.

Hi Lana, what a lovely thing to do ..

Bird, thanks for your comments :D I did eat them, I confess, lol
I am a bit of a one for planting trees so may have done a pear tree in the past but nice one, I don't have too much room but a fan trained might go in somewhere at some point.
