The Cart Horse at Blists Hill

I am in the midst of quite a lot of art right now. I joined the UK coloured pencil society and it gave me the impetous to really work at a couple of projects. They have a couple of exhibitions each year and as I joined, I got to thinking....well what would I enter? It focused the mind a little and I decided to really push the boat out on a couple of things and see if I could come up with something that was worthy of entering!
Instead of rushing, as I sometimes can do I have been working on a couple of pieces where I am really slowing myself down. The first was the spaniel which is a post or so down and I will post an update soon but the second is my most adventurous to date. I have made two visits now to the Blists Hill museuum at Ironbridge which is high on my list for a local tourist blog post, I do have some great images and lots to tell....but, that is perhaps next in my series.
Meanwhile I took this photo:

Andy challenged me to have a go at this and to be honest, I really do think it may be a little beyond my capabilities. To make matter worse, I have chosen watercolour paper, a first! Then caran d'ache pablo's, also a first!
It took me hours just to skecth it out!

Then several hours and lots of soul searching later, I have got his far!

I do have mixed feelings on this piece. However, I still feel that as a subject, he is most wonderful!

I think this is coming along really well :D its good to challenge yourself once and awhile. nice job on the ear covering (I can't remember right now what its called).you gave him a roman nose but it works well here, and unless you put it next to the ref. pic you would never know :)

Thanks for the feedback Jen, I don't know what the ear covering is called either. What is a roman nose?

If you want my honest opinion you've improved on the photo... really you have, and what's the point in doing the drawing if you aren't going to put a bit of yourself into it? It's really sensitively done and the colours are lovely. I can see why you are wanting to take your time over it. Just don't fret over it so much you end up getting stuck!

Hi Bird and thank you for your lovely observations.I hope I don't get get stuck now, I was very daunted in the beginning but there is something about him that really appeals. When I was taking photo's on the day, he almost looked shy, he was sort of looking at me out through those eyelashes...I want to capture that magical patience that just radiates from him. I am working on something else in unison, I think I just need to take my time! Which is a first LOL

a roman nose is when the horses head is straight or turns out, rather then in like an arabians.

Some examplesIts pretty common on draft horses :)

that's fantastic and not beyond your capabilities. The photo is gorgeous and looking forward to your finished piece after a good start.

Hi Chrissy ~ It's great to scroll backwards and read these posts from the top so to speak. I really like the way you have shown the muscle structure underneath the skin. That, together with the sheen and texture of the skin and hair, makes this portrait special.
